This is overdue, partly due to the long list of contenders that seems impossible to shrink. This is the best I can do. In no particular order:
1. Golden Train by Justin Nozuka (2006) - this was what brought me closest to creating a myspace account in j2, just so i could be justin nozuka's friend. i nearly died when i watched the video in the middle of last year.
2. Bella Luna by Jason Mraz (2005) - you're the ghost of royalty imposing love you are the queen and king combining everything intertwining like a ring around the fingahh of a girrrlah
3. Thunderbolt by Patrick Park (2003) - the banjo/harmonica part gave it the edge over Something Pretty.
4. 23 by Jimmy Eat World (2004) - objections?
5. Say It Right by Nelly Furtado (2006) - i can see this becoming a madonna-ish classic ten years down the road, like seriously. this beat is sick.
6. Fix You by Coldplay (2005) - +100 brownie points when it was played in The OC so damn fantastically(no spoilerzz).
7. Lisztomania by Phoenix (2009) - do let do let do let
8. Transatlanticism by Death Cab For Cutie (2003) - lyrical imagery and music both so. epic.
9. Float On by Modest Mouse (2002) - the perfect "just throw everything out of the window and live life over again" song.
10. The (After) Life Of The Party by Fall Out Boy (2007) - a rare gem in an otherwise mediocre album. how exactly does one "work the room" though?
11. Run by Snow Patrol (2003) - light up light up, as if you had a choice? the last few chords soooo goooooodd.
12. Congratulations by Blue October feat. Imogen Heap (2006) - blue october oh blue october how do you write such gut-wrenching i-need-to-hold-you-now-or-i'll-die lyrics? noteworthy too: She's My Ride Home.
13. Take Me To The Riot by Stars (2007) - the existence of this song makes me want to kill myself for missing them when they came to singapore.
14. Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens (2005) - "and he takes and he takes and he takes." weep, o woeful heart.
15. Disturbia by Rihanna (2008) - BAM BAM BI DAM BAM BAM BI DAM DAM
16. The Shadow Proves The Sunshine by Switchfoot (2005) - so much hope in this song, before the subsequent albums flopped. same for previous song.
17. Beautiful Day by U2 (2001) - the only good thing bono's ever written.
18. Koop Island Blues by Koop (2006) - so sultry and jazzy.
19. Poker Face by Lady GaGa (2008) - and when it comes to love if it's not rough it isn't fun? well said gaga, well said.
20. Wild Horses by Alicia Keys feat. Adam Levine (2005) - better than the one chiefly sung by adam levine feat. alicia keys. i think this is the only cover in the entire list.
21. The Way I Are by Timbaland feat. Keri Hilson and D.O.E. (2007) - more sickk beats.
22. She Moves In Her Own Way by The Kooks (2006) - this is so happy it's crazy. the part where he goes ohh whooa ohhh ohhh sounds soo accidental it's fantastic.
23. Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine by The Killers (2005) - hard to choose one for the killers. CONCERT ON SUNDAY OMG
24. Hide And Seek by Imogen Heap (2005) - so epic it was remixed into a whole different song in a whole different genre.
25. The Dance by Charlotte Martin (2006) - "it's a love that weighs 50 men". at least that's what it sounds like she's singing. crazy woman desperate for love will belt imba tunes.
26. Turn On Me by The Shins (2007) - "fond of Y-O-U" SO MANY PUNzXZ. though the whistling and cheeky lyrics of New Slang too, is worth a mention.
27. Geraldine by Glasvegas (2008) - epic instrumentals are recognisable the second you hear it, as discovered during the very second i hit play to this song on zy's ipod sometime early last year.
28. Slow Dancing In A Burning Room by John Mayer (2006) - never really liked him until continuum. the sytycd dance to this was pretty awesome too.
29. The Mixed Tape by Jack's Mannequin (2005) - when it comes down to it, this is still no.1 on my jm playlist. dark blue, holiday from real, the resolution, all noteworthy too.
30. Hometown Glory by Adele (2008) - ROUND MY HOMETOWN. mad mad pianos, seriously atmosphere creation at its finest.
Hoorah, I can already see myself hating this list weeks from now.
